尼泊爾25日發生的規模7.8強震，其實災難專家早已預知尼泊爾會發生災難性強震。在一週前，就有約50名地震學家與社會科學家齊聚在尼泊爾首都加德滿都（Kathmandu），籌策如何協助擁擠、過度開發，建築物又老舊不堪的尼泊爾，在強震來襲前，做好妥善地準備工作。

據美聯社報導，專家們知道自己是在和時間賽跑，只是不知道令人憂心的狀況何時會到來。英國劍橋大學地質學系主任詹姆斯（James Jackson）說：「就像某種夢魘，遲早會發生。」

雖然詹姆斯沒料到地震會來得這麼快，但他表示：「實際上就地質而言，發生的事情完全在預料之中。」各界早就擔心加德滿都會發生地震，不只因為此地位在斷層上，更因此地的人為狀況，讓情形雪上加霜。

詹姆斯還是「無國界地震組織」（Earthquake Without Frontiers）首屈一指的科學家，他說：「地震的地區我先前去過，我到那裡時，就認為這裡會有麻煩。」
